A spectacle prescription records the optical correction measured during an eye examination. This tool explains common abbreviations; it does not check whether a prescription is correct or suitable.

SPH is the main spherical lens power, measured in dioptres. A minus value is commonly used to correct myopia (short-sightedness); a plus value is commonly used to correct hyperopia (long-sightedness).
PD (pupillary distance) is a measurement used to position spectacle lenses correctly in front of the eyes. It is not the same thing as the optical prescription.
